Relationship conflict and couples support

Conflict may rise around workload, money, sex, family or expectations, but fear, coercion and violence are not ordinary communication problems.

Direct guidance

What to know or do

Consider structured support when both people can participate safely. Ask to speak with a clinician alone if there is control, surveillance, threats, forced sex or concern that couples work could increase danger.

What changes the answer

  • How long the change has lasted and how it affects sleep, eating, self-care and safety
  • Past diagnoses, trauma, treatment response, medicines and relapse warning signs
  • Privacy, practical support, coercion, immediate danger and who can stay with you
