Grief and bereavement during pregnancy

Grief can affect sleep, appetite, concentration and daily function without following a fixed timeline or cancelling other feelings about pregnancy.

What to know or do

Tell the care team what has changed and what support is available. Seek urgent help for inability to stay safe, not eating or drinking, severe panic, confusion or thoughts of self-harm.

What changes the answer

  • How long the change has lasted and how it affects sleep, eating, self-care and safety
  • Past diagnoses, trauma, treatment response, medicines and relapse warning signs
  • Privacy, practical support, coercion, immediate danger and who can stay with you

When to get individual help

Contact your doctor or maternity service promptly and describe the timing, severity, associated symptoms and pregnancy week so they can choose the right assessment.
