Side sleeping and waking on your back

From the third trimester, settle to sleep on your side; if you wake on your back, roll to a side without panic.

What to know or do

Use whichever side is comfortable and pillows for support. Tell care if lying down causes breathlessness, faintness or chest discomfort.

What changes the answer

  • Pregnancy week, sleep position and what wakes or limits you
  • Snoring, breathing pauses, restless legs, pain, reflux or severe daytime sleepiness
  • The exact pillow, device, medicine, supplement or remedy being considered
