Receiving test or placental results after a loss

Arrange a planned results conversation that separates what a test found, what it ruled out, what remains unexplained and what may change future care.

What to know or do

Ask for a written copy and time for questions. A result can be useful even when it does not identify one cause, and lack of an explanation is not evidence that an ordinary action or emotion caused the loss.

What changes the answer

  • What has been confirmed, what remains uncertain and when follow-up can clarify it
  • Bleeding, pain, infection, faintness and other physical recovery or urgent-care needs
  • Personal, cultural, spiritual, partner, family and mental-health support preferences

When to get individual help

Check the exact item or situation with a doctor, midwife, pharmacist or relevant clinician; the name of a broad category is not enough for a personal decision.
