Changing mole or new skin lesion

Pregnancy is not a reason to dismiss a mole or lesion that is changing in size, shape, colour, symptoms or bleeding.

Direct guidance

What to know or do

Arrange examination and note when the change started; a clinician can decide whether dermoscopy or biopsy is needed. Do not wait until after birth solely because you are pregnant.

What changes the answer

  • The exact ingredient, procedure, body area, amount and frequency
  • Whether treatment is medically needed or can reasonably be postponed
  • Skin damage, infection, fumes, heat, radiation and medicines used with the procedure

When to get individual help

Contact your doctor or maternity service promptly and describe the timing, severity, associated symptoms and pregnancy week so they can choose the right assessment.
