Gradual, even swelling can be common, but sudden swelling or swelling with headache, vision change, upper-abdominal pain or high blood pressure needs urgent advice.

Rest with comfortable position changes and mention swelling that is worsening or limiting footwear. One hot, painful or much more swollen leg needs prompt assessment for a clot.

  • When it began, whether it is worsening, and how it affects eating, sleep or activity
  • Severity, pattern, one-sided symptoms and accompanying bleeding, fever or fluid loss
  • Pregnancy week, baby movement and relevant conditions or medicines
