Fetal hiccups and repeated rhythmic movement

Rhythmic repeated movements may be fetal hiccups, but they should not be used to prove that the overall movement pattern is normal.

Direct guidance

What to know or do

Learn the usual movement pattern as your maternity service advises and contact them promptly for reduced or changed movement, even if hiccup-like movement is still present.

What changes the answer

  • When it began, whether it is worsening, and how it affects eating, sleep or activity
  • Severity, pattern, one-sided symptoms and accompanying bleeding, fever or fluid loss
  • Pregnancy week, baby movement and relevant conditions or medicines
