Fatigue and exhaustion

Fatigue is common, especially early and late in pregnancy, but severity, onset and associated symptoms can point to anaemia, infection, sleep or other problems.

What to know or do

Mention fatigue that is sudden, worsening or disabling, especially with breathlessness, palpitations, fainting, fever, low mood or severe daytime sleepiness. Do not drive when unable to stay alert.

What changes the answer

  • When it began, whether it is worsening, and how it affects eating, sleep or activity
  • Severity, pattern, one-sided symptoms and accompanying bleeding, fever or fluid loss
  • Pregnancy week, baby movement and relevant conditions or medicines
