Diarrhoea or gastroenteritis

Short-lived diarrhoea may settle, but pregnancy lowers the margin for dehydration and does not rule out foodborne infection or another cause.

What to know or do

Contact care for fever, blood, severe pain, repeated vomiting, very little urine, weakness, contractions or symptoms that persist. Check any anti-diarrhoeal medicine before taking it.

What changes the answer

  • When it began, whether it is worsening, and how it affects eating, sleep or activity
  • Severity, pattern, one-sided symptoms and accompanying bleeding, fever or fluid loss
  • Pregnancy week, baby movement and relevant conditions or medicines
